It's all about the ingredients to make the best Italian Sub Sandwich! Crispy warm bread layered with a special spread, then piled high with cured meats, provolone cheese, and fresh crunchy vegetables. Finish it off with a good drizzle of Italian dressing and your favorite toppings. You got yourself the ultimate Sub Sandwich!
¼cupoptions are: banana peppers, black olives, chopped fresh basil, or cherry peppers
Spread:
¼cupmayonnaise
1tablespoonsundried tomatoes, finely minced (I like to use the ones marinated in oil)
1tablespooncalabrian peppers (or other peppers that are preserved in vinegar)- finely minced
Italian Deli Dressing:
1tablespoonolive oil
2tablespoonred wine vinegar
a dash of salt and pepper to taste
1teaspoondried oregano
Instructions
1. Prep the veggies: Slice the onions, tomato, and finely shred the lettuce.2. Prepare the spread: In a small bowl combine the mayonnaise with the finely minced sundried tomatoes and peppers. Mix. You can add a sprinkle of salt if you like.3. Prepare the Deli Dressing: In another small bowl whisk together the olive oil with the red wine vinegar, oregano, and salt and pepper.Assembly:1. Cut loaf of bread horizontally. Smear the mayo/pepper spread on the bottom half of the sandwich.2. Layer the salami slices. I added two layers, followed by the provolone cheese. Then add pepperoni, ham, copacola, and prosciutto slices.3. Top with the tomato slices, onion rings, and shredded iceberg lettuce.4. Generously drizzle the Italian deli dressing over the lettuce. You can also toss the lettuce with the dressing together and then top the sandwich, and even add some more dressing on the inside of the top half of the bread.5. Top with optional toppings of your choice, such as banana peppers, cherry peppers, black olives, or fresh basil.6. Cover the sandwich with the top half of the bread, and pressing down with a little pressure, cut into pieces. Enjoy!
Notes
Tip: Try not to layer the tomatoes over the cheese. It will be very slippery! Another tip is to take the bite out of the onions by soaking them in water for a bit. Most of the time they are just fine, but it will definitely help to make the onion less pungent. Just be sure to dry them well before you add them to the sandwich, so it doesn't become too soggy.
