What Is An Italian Sub Sandwich?
A sub sandwich also called sometimes "Submarine", "Hoagie", or "New York Italian Hero", is a type of sandwich made from a bread roll split lengthwise and is filled with cured meats, cheese, vegetables, and condiments. I combined all of them together to make my own epic sub sandwich!
Other Additions to the Italian Hoagie Recipe
While the Italian hoagie might be my perfect sandwich, it is completely customizable. You can leave some of the meats out, swap to your favorite cheese, add olives and spicy banana pepper rings, or other additions to customize it to your liking.
How To Serve
Serve this Italian Sub Sandwich for a quick and delicious lunch, or pair it with a side salad or soup for more of a meal. It's super easy to make for a weeknight dinner.
How to make an Italian Sub, and what bread to use:
If you order an Italian Hero in a New York Deli, you will be served this sandwich on an Italian Hero roll, which is a 12-inch Italian bread roll. Since the rolls are hard to find at regular grocery stores, you can substitute it with an Italian bread loaf, or a French baguette.
So, how to make it; (Exact measurements are in the recipe card below)
- Begin with prepping your condiments, including slicing your onions, tomatoes, and shredding your lettuce.
- Next, make your Deli Style Dressing which consists of olive oil, red wine vinegar, salt, pepper, and oregano. You can toss your lettuce shreds into the dressing, or drizzle it on top at the end (like I did in my video).
- Make your spread, a mixture of mayonnaise, sundried tomatoes, and Calabrian peppers. The spread is optional but makes a good base and adds more flavor.
- Cut your bread lengthwise open, then smear the spread on one side.
- Begin to layer the meat, starting with thinly sliced salami. Pile it on at least two layers. Next add your cheese of choice, although provolone is the original version. Then add your pepperoni, thinly sliced ham, and capicola. You could leave it at that, or add some prosciutto on top as well.
- Add your vegetables, including tomato, and thin slices of red onion rings, and top it off with the lettuce shreds. Add a generous drizzle of the oil and vinegar dressing to the lettuce if you havent mixed it already. You can even further drizzle it on the inside of the top bread layer. Tip: Try not to layer the tomatoes over the cheese. It will be very slippery! Another tip is to take the bite out of the onions by soaking them in water for a bit. Most of the time they are just fine, but it will help to make the onion less pungent. Just be sure to dry them well before you add them to the sandwich, so it doesn't become too soggy.
- Close the sandwich, press down with a little pressure, and slice. Enjoy!
