Embracing Comfort: The Delight of Creamy Oatmeal
In the realm of comforting breakfasts, few dishes evoke a sense of warmth and satisfaction quite like a bowl of creamy oatmeal. Whether itβs a brisk winter morning or a lazy Sunday brunch, this simple yet versatile dish has a way of soothing the soul and energizing the body.
Nutritional Benefits
Beyond its convenience, creamy oatmeal packs a punch when it comes to nutritional value. Oats are gluten-free, and whole grain, rich in fiber, which aids in digestion and helps you feel full longer. They also contain essential vitamins and minerals such as manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc. The addition of milk provides calcium and protein, making this dish not only delicious but also a wholesome way to start your day.
HOW TO MAKE OATMEAL:
The key to making creamy, not gluey or sticky oatmeal is using the 3 to 1 formula, meaning 3 cups of liquid to 1 cup of oats.
Cook Oats
Start by soaking 1 cup of oats in 1 cup of water. Then, heat the mixture over medium-low to medium heat and cook the oats gently for about 1 minute. Next, once the water is nearly absorbed, incorporate 1 cup of milk and stir well. Allow the oats to cook on medium heat for approximately 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Important: Avoid continuous stirring, as it can result in a starchy, gummy texture. Instead, let the oats cook undisturbed for intervals of about a minute.
Adjust Consistency
As the oats begin to thicken, incorporate the remaining milk into the pot. Optionally, to enhance the flavor, you can add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract or a cinnamon stick. Stir occasionally to ensure a smooth texture and prevent lumps from forming. Keep in mind that the cooking time will vary depending on the type of oats used. Quaker Quick Oats cook faster, while Old Fashioned Rolled Oats or Steel Cut Oats require longer cooking times to achieve the desired consistency. For reference, Old Fashioned Oats, and Steel Cut oats will cook for about 15-20 minutes.
Serve
Once the oats have thickened completely and absorbed all the liquid, remove the pot from the heat. Optional: incorporate 1 tablespoon of butter (salted or unsalted) by swirling it gently into the oats without fully mixing.
Serve the creamy oatmeal in bowls (this recipe yields 2 to 3 servings) and garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar and your favorite toppings.

Recipe
Creamy Oatmeal
Ingredients
- 1 cup oats
- 1 cup water
- 2 cups milk - I use full fat milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon butter
Instructions
- Note: Cooking time will vary depending what type of oats are used. I use Quaker Quick oats. Rolled oats will take a little longer to cook.1. Pour the Oats into a medium pot, then add the water. Stir. Cook on medium heat for about 1 minute, or until almost all of the water is soaked up by the oats.2. Slowly add 1 cup of the milk. Stir to combine. Cook for about 3 to 4 minutes, or until oats are thicken up. Add vanilla extract (optional) Then add the rest of the milk. Stir, and let cook for another few minutes, stirring ocasionally. The mixture will thicken up beautifully, and will look creamy. Turn off the heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter. Give it a swirl. Serve hot with your favorite toppings. Some of my favorite topping ideas are:1. Blueberry Oatmeal: Cinnamon-Sugar, Blueberries, chopped dates, chopped pecan nuts2.
