Sweet and sticky baked chicken marinated in a mouthwatering soy and honey sauce. Serve it with steamed rice, my Asian Cucumber Salad, in lettuce wraps, or in a salad. Whichever way you serve it, it will be delicious!
This honey soy chicken dinner comes together so quick and easy. With only a few ingredients that you may already have, you can have dinner ready in about 45 minutes. My family loves to scoop up the sauce with the rice, so I usually double up the sauce ingredients. If you like to try this as well, make sure to read the Instructions in bold print in the printable recipe card below!
HOW LONG TO COOK CHICKEN IN THE OVEN AND WHAT TEMPERATURE?
Using a cast-iron skillet, or a baking sheet bake the chicken drumsticks at 425ΒΊ F (220 ΒΊ C) for about 35 to 40 minutes. Turn them a few times while baking to ensure browning from all sides. To get a nice crisp color, broil on high heat setting for an extra 5 minutes.
Chicken is considered cooked fully through at an internal temperature reading of 165 ΒΊ F (70 ΒΊ C)
Variations and Substitutions:
I love this recipe as is and make it as written. But in case you would like to vary the basic recipe, here are a few ideas for you:
Replace the drumsticks with boneless chicken thighs: If you use boneless chicken thighs, you will need to bake them for about 20 to 25 minutes.
For large bone-in thighs, it should be cooked for 40 to 45 minutes. As always, the internal temperature of fully cooked chicken should be 165 ΒΊF.
I keep the skin on, but if you wish to remove it, you can. In that case, just be generous when coating the chicken pieces with the marinade to prevent them from drying out.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS
I usually serve this dish on a bed of steamed white rice, and a side of my Asian Cucumber Salad. However, it goes really well with steamed vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, baby corn, and cabbage. A stir-fry would also be lovely!
STORING LEFTOVERS
Leftovers keep well in the fridge, in an airtight container, for 3 to 4 days. They are very tasty cold (try to shred the mead and serve it on a bed of salad greens for a quick lunch), or reheat in a microwave oven.

Recipe
Asian - Baked Honey Soy Chicken
Ingredients
- 2 lbs chicken drumsticks
- β cup light soy sauce
- β cup hoisin sauce
- Β½ cup honey
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- ΒΌ teaspoon chile flakes
- 1 -2 garlic cloves - finely minced
- Β½ teaspoon ginger, finely grated (or paste)
Garnish
- 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
- 2 tablespoon scallions (spring onions - green part)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven to 425Β° F (220Β° C)1. To a small bowl add soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, lemon juice, garlic, ginger, and chili flakes. Mix together, then pour the marinade over the chicken, or so that marinade covers the chicken. Cover with a plastic wrap and allow to marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours up to overnight.2. Transfer the chicken to a baking sheet or a large cast-iron skillet with its marinade. Bake for about 35 to 40minutes, turning the chicken a few times over to allow browning from all sides. Then turn the dial to 500 (or use a broiler function). Continue to bake for 5 more minutes. We want the skin on the chicken drumsticks to be browned and crispened. Remove from the oven, and add the finishing touches by sprinkling sesame seeds and freshly cut scallions over. Enjoy with some steamed rice and my Asian cucumber salad! Note: I doubled this sauce recipe in my video because we love to scoop extra sauce with the rice. If you want to double it up as well, then marinate the chicken only with about 6 tablespoons of the marinade. Then bake as directed. After 40 minutes, I removed the chicken from the oven and moved it to the stovetop. I poured the remaining marinade over the chicken and cooked it on medium/high until the sauce thickened for up about 3 to 5 minutes. Just until the sauce resembles the consistency of honey.
