Healthy homemade Apple chips are one of our family's favorite Fall treats to snack on. They are crispy, crunchy and naturally sweet. They are easy to make, and these apple chips can be enjoyed guilt-free as they maintain their fiber content as a fresh apple. Win - Win.
Tip: The best way to make apple chips is with a kitchen mandoline. That way the chips are cut evenly, and come out nice and thin. The thinner you slice the apple chips the more crispy they will turn out. See notes below!
WHAT APPLES TO USE FOR APPLE CHIPS
Cooler nights, fresh breezes and the first of the apples! Im so ready for autumn! We grow four different apple varieties in our orchard. Red Delicious, Akane, Granny Smith, and Pink Pearl which has beautiful bright pink flesh. A few apples have fallen off the tree that means they are ready for lots of apple goodness coming our way.
You can basically take any type of apple for apple chips. Sweet or tart. However, in my experience the final color of the apple chips depends on the type of apple used. Tart apples will remain light, whereas sweet apples will turn dark, or slightly brown in color. See my tips below on how I prepare mine.
HOW TO BAKE APPLE CHIPS IN THE OVEN
You can bake Apple chips very easy in the oven. However, I like to add a little bit of lemon juice to my apple slices to prevent them from turning brown. I also like to brush them with a little honey if using a tart apple like Granny Smith, whereas a sweeter apple variety like Gala, Jazz, Honeycrisp and Fuji don't need it. It is completely up to you!
If desired, you can sprinkle the tops with a little cinnamon. That is also very delicious, and makes your whole house smell amazing!
Arrange apple slices in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake the apple chips in a 200 degree F oven for 2 to 2 ½ hours, until the apples are dry. NOTE: The total time will vary based on the thickness of the slices and the type of apple used. If you slice them ⅙ to ⅛ inch thick will result in a crisp chip. To test the apple chips, remove one from the baking sheet, and let it cool for about 2 minutes. They will crisp up more as they cool down. If you are happy with the crispness take them out of the oven, and let them cool on the baking sheet. If you feel that they need more time, then turn off the oven and let the apples stay in the oven as it cools down for another 30 minutes.
HOW TO MAKE APPLE CHIPS IN THE DEHYDRATOR
This simple recipe works great with a food dehydrator. Just arrange apple slices in a single layer on the trays, sprinkle them with cinnamon, sugar, brush with honey, or just as is. Turn dehydrator dial to 135 degree F (57 degree C) for about 6 hours. If the slices are thicker than ⅛ inch they will take longer to draw all the moisture out. Check apples. The slices should feel dry and crispy.
STORING APPLE CHIPS

SERVING SUGGESTION
